A letter to our Apple Community from Salt Spring Wild Cider:
It looks like it is going to be another big year for apples on Salt Spring Island. Over the past 11 years, Salt Spring Wild has been a word of mouth place for the community to bring apples for drop off. In 2025 we pressed over 250,000lb or 60,000L of Salt Spring apples - our biggest year to date! We are still paying for the storage of some of that pressed juice. Since there are no storage facilities on the island, we have to pay to have that juice trucked off island to be stored and brought back to the island when we have space.
The abundance of fruit this year is concerning for us on a few fronts:
We can manage one large fruit year and hope for a typical smaller follow up year but we simply cannot handle the storage for two big years in a row.
So, there are a few options we can think of to manage this:
Our first suggestion is for you to find another option for your fruit this year. The second option is for us to reduce our buying cost by .10/lb to.30/lb. We know that you won't like this, but it's the only way we can see to manage the abundance two years in a row without turning people away. We cannot increase the bottle cost…so this is all we've got.
Also, please note that we will be very strict with unripe fruit this year and will not be accepting Ben Davis apples. If you aren't sure if your fruit is ripe or not, please message us for an appointment to check. In other bad news, we will be limiting our picking of fruit this year to orchards we lease (if you are interested in having your property leased for farm tax purposes and have over 2 acres, please reach out and we can chat). If you would like your fruit picked and do not have a lease with us, please reach out to see if we have availability.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
